Birthday cake for a sweet 1 year-old!

This cake was so much fun to make. I had gotten an email a couple months back from someone who had been directed to my blog by a friend and loved what she had seen; she requested that I make her daughter's first birthday cake! It was so neat to go from just an idea a couple months back to bringing the cake to reality and delivering it to the birthday girl last week!

The client had a pretty good idea of what she wanted for cake, so we played off those ideas and her party theme, which included zoo animals. She opted for a 2 tiered cake with chocolate cake filled with strawberry preserves and a vanilla buttercream.

It was my first time making fondant figures, so I was a little nervous going into it. I still have a lot to learn, but I loved how these little animals turned out...they each have such character! :) The giraffe was the birthday girl's favorite animal, so that was a must. Then a pink elephant and a cheeky monkey rounded it out.

A number 1, a fondant gumball border in the theme colors, and a banner with the birthday girl's name finished off the cake.

Thanks for the business, R! I hope your party was a success and that little A felt better and got to enjoy some cake and partying!

Jon took a few pictures while I was in the process of making the cake...kind of a fun step-by-step photo collage!

Flowers and frogs

These cupcakes were made for 2 different birthday girls. I love how cupcakes can say something about the person.

The flower cupcakes were for the daughter of a friend--a sweet, happy young lady. They left the design up to me--they just wanted something fun and girly. I'd been wanting to make fondant cutouts for a while, so here was my chance! I decided to go with pink and purple icing, topped with white fondant flowers...feminine, fun, and sweet! To balance those out, I also did some purple swirl cupcakes with white pearl sprinkles.

I offered to make frog cupcakes for my little niece. She is a fun, spunky, energetic girl with a big love for frogs. I found an idea online and tweaked it to make it my own...big eyes, and a cute red tongue. Doesn't get cuter than that! :)

Olivia!

I adore the Olivia books...Olivia is cute, spunky, and a little bit of a troublemaker--kinda like a lot of kids I know! :) The books are very well written, and often make me laugh out loud. So when a friend from church asked me to make an Olivia cake for her daughter's 3rd birthday, I was quite excited!

She asked for an 11x14 chocolate cake (the birthday girl's favorite!), decorated with Olivia in her ballgown and a color scheme of red, blue, white and black. I armed myself with a bunch of printouts of Olivia, and away I went. I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I was very happy with how the cake turned out!

Plus, here's a couple pictures of a yummy cake I made for my wonderful mother-in-law's birthday...yellow cake with a yummy chocolate frosting!

I'm super excited to start my holiday baking...this week I want to start some decorated sugar cookies and post them soon--so check back!
Have a sweet one!
